Free income tax preparation
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free income tax preparation to households earning $56,000 or less, and to disabled, elderly, and non-English-speaking residents of Hampden County. Basic Massachusetts or Connecticut state tax returns are prepared along with federal tax returns. Filing is electronic. VITA is offered annually, from January through April, at various sites.
VITA helps ensure that households take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit (CTC), education credits, and more. This program saves low-income families millions of dollars by taking advantage of tax credits and waiving filing fees.
VITA strengthens families, reduces pressure on city services, and brings significant federal dollars into the local economy. Participants are encouraged to use their tax refund money to establish bank accounts or reduce outstanding financial debts.
