The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program provides free income tax return preparation to low to moderate income taxpayers. VITA helps ensure that families take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit (CTC), education credits and more.
Volunteers help prepare basic, current year electronic tax returns for eligible taxpayers free of charge. VITA is offered annually, from January through April, at various sites. This program saves low-income families millions of dollars by taking advantage of tax credits.
VITA provides income tax filing assistance to mid to low-income; disabled, elderly, and non-English speaking residents of Hampden County. VITA helps working families take advantage of all of the tax credits available to them. Volunteers from the community help prepare basic, current year, electronic, state and federal tax returns for eligible taxpayers.
VITA strengthens families, reduces pressure on city services, and brings significant federal dollars into the local economy. Participants are encouraged to use their tax refund money to establish bank accounts, start Individual Development Accounts, or reduce outstanding financial debts.
During the past year we served 2,297 low-income taxpayers, resulting in them reaping $1,991,385 in Earned Income Tax Credits, and a further $3,830,695 in total Federal returns. Additionally, we saved these taxpayers an estimated $424,945 in tax preparation fees.
